Blue-Collar Roots Raised to Earn Your Own Way
Nancy grew up in a blue-collar family in Youngstown, Ohio, where hard work wasn’t something people talked about — it was simply how you lived.
Her parents built their life through sacrifice, perseverance, and making every dollar count. Those values shaped Nancy from an early age and stayed with her throughout her life.
She started working at 17 and went on to build a 43-year career in the private sector before bringing that experience and work ethic to public service.
Nancy's Family Roots
The Family We Built
Nancy married her high school classmate, Ed, after the two reconnected following graduation. Together they built a family that today includes three children, six grandchildren, and their rescue pup, Henry.
Ed served for more than 20 years in the National Guard. While raising their family, Nancy worked full-time, building a 43-year career that began at Ohio Bell and eventually took the Miller family to Atlanta.
Family life taught Nancy many of the same lessons she had learned growing up — responsibility, perseverance, and the importance of being there for the people who depend on you.
Family, Service and Sacrifice
Ed served for more than 20 years in the National Guard, including an eight-month overseas deployment as a military police soldier during Operation Desert Storm.
While Ed served abroad, Nancy worked full-time and raised their young children at home. She also helped lead a Family Support Unit serving the spouses, children and parents of deployed soldiers.
Nancy and another military spouse helped families navigate mortgage and utility assistance, household finances and insurance claims. They organized activities for children and helped families stay connected and informed while their loved ones were overseas.
Service doesn’t always wear a uniform. Sometimes, it waits at home.
Falling in Love with Volusia County
Nancy and Ed’s connection to Volusia County goes back more than five decades.
They first began vacationing in Daytona Beach in 1972. As devoted NASCAR fans, they returned year after year for the races, but their connection to the area grew into much more. Daytona Beach became a place where they spent time with family, made memories and eventually began thinking about putting down roots.
In 2010, Nancy and Ed purchased a home in Daytona Beach Shores. For several years, they divided their time between Atlanta and the Shores before making Volusia County their permanent home in 2014.
The place they loved visiting eventually became the place they chose to call home.
A Daytona Tradition
Nancy and Ed first began vacationing in Daytona Beach in 1972. As longtime NASCAR fans, the races brought them back year after year.
Over the decades, Daytona became more than a favorite destination. It became part of their family’s story — and eventually the community they chose to call home.
What began as a Daytona tradition became a lifelong connection to Volusia County.
Volusia County Becomes Home
Nancy and Ed purchased their home in Volusia County in 2010. In 2014, they made Volusia County their permanent home, while Nancy continued commuting back and forth for work.
In April 2018, Nancy retired from AT&T after a 43-year career in the private sector. She was ready for more time at home with Ed, family, friends, and the community they had grown to love.
But retirement didn't stay quiet for long.
Several residents urged Nancy to run for Mayor. On the last day of qualifying in June 2018, she entered the race.
With the November election only months away, Nancy hit the ground running — meeting residents, listening to their concerns, and working hard to earn their trust.
It was the beginning of a new chapter: public service.
